Albert Lozano replied to Michael Sibbernsen's discussion 'Camera lens crashes through roof... Anyone we know?'
It was not my group...    I would be very scared to put a DSLR in a high altitude balloon with all the vibration that goes on. And the cost of the camera itself if it does not land softly.   I would bet that it was a scenic ride on a…

Albert,   Yes, most of the time we fly the Garmin-18 and MicroTrak 300.  I also fly a newer unit with the frequency agile MicroTrak8000.  Stratostar has nice systems that are ready to fly.   I've also seen good reviews for…

Howard,   You mentioned earlier about flying a APRS unit for an indepdent tracking system.  What do you fly?  I was reading through the forum and you mentioned using a Garmin-18 and a  MicroTrack 300. Do you still use those? Do…

Albert,   Thanks for sharing the nice video.  If you can afford it, I'd encourage you to fly a 2-meter APRS radio unit to give an independent tracking system.   Glad you recovered everything.   Howard

First HAB Launch. Penn State Wilkes-Barre. 11.13.2010

After a lot of problems with the weather, we finally caught a break on Saturday November 13, 2010 and Penn State Wilkes-Barre got to have its first High Altitude Balloon launch. Somehow I messed up at the time of inflating the balloon:  It was way underinflated.  I should have known better and filled it up with a whole tank of Helium, but everybody commented that it seemed very full and we stopped inflating it. And we forgot to measure the lift.  The result:  It went up but with a Rate of…See More

Steve, I cannot provide as much feedback as Howard and the others who have a bunch of flights under their belt. I have exactly one flight that happened last Saturday. Talk about scary and stressful ! Although I had participated in a couple of…

Howard Brooks replied to Albert Lozano's discussion 'Risk Management'
Albert, We don't have a formal Risk Management office at DePauw. Everyone in the administration knows that I launch balloons and that the payload strings land at a location that is not controlled by me. I have explained that I operate under…

Risk Management

Few hours before our first balloon launch, Risk Management at our University got word of the project. They had a different interpretation of FAR 101, in particular they wanted us to comply with FAR 101.35 like having the radar cross-section, secondary cutting device, etc...   I just basically didn't have the time to convince them that we were exempt for these regulations due to size/weight of payloads, etc.   That was the second time I had to scrub our first launch... very dissapointing for…See More
