I found these UBA and UVB sensors: http://www.vernier.com/probes/uv-group.html They are 5 V, so I think it should be fairly easy to build and adapter for the Stratostar interface boards or Hobos, or connect them to a microcontroller. There is also…

Hello Bolloonatics! One of the high school student groups I am working with this summer is designing a microbiology experiment and would like to monitor UV flux during the flight. Does anybody know of any UV sensors that produce analog signals that…

Bernhard, The EOSS program has a much more complicated interface. However, it also leaves a nice record of its predicted path for comparison with other predictors. You can get the total predicted data file, like U Wyo, and compare points along the…

Thanks, Howard! Near Space Ventures is back up! I compared its predictions with those of http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~cuspaceflight/predict/index.php and http://weather.uwyo.edu/polar/balloon_traj.html, and they seem fairly consitent. For example, a la…

Here's another site that works fairly well. The descent tail may be a little long. Watch your units :) http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~cuspaceflight/predict/index.php Howard

Near Space Ventures is still down, and I am getting nervous because we're doing a launch with a group of high school students next week :S Last year Howard Brooks posted a comment saying that DePauw also uses a program called “Balloon Track for Wind…

Hi everybody,Does anyone know what's up with the Near Space Ventures balloon flight track prediction web site? For the last few days the access code one has to type in on page 2 hasn't been showing up. I think this is a code required by NOAA to acce…

I did a bit more research, and it seems that cell phone use is prohibited after all: The Code of Federal Regulations 22.925 says: Cellular telephones installed in or carried aboard airplanes, balloons or any other type of aircraft must not be opera…

Yes, I think you are right. In the CNN video to said that they determined their maximum altitude by extrapolating the ascent rate at lower altitudes, so they must have either completely lost tracking, or at least didn't get the altitude information.…

Bernhard, One drawback may be the GPS unit in the cell phone. I believe that the MIT students lost contact for quite awhile, especially above the 60 kft elevation. As is true with some independent GPS units, the software may be mis-written to block…

Thanks, Howard!! What a cool tracking device! You would think that if there was a problem they would have heard about it after being on CNN, ABC, and Fox. I also emailed one of the students to ask him if he ever investigated if there were any restri…

Bernhard, Cell phones are, to the best of my knowledge, legal. Some MIT students flew a balloon last fall with only a cell phone as their tracking system. Here's a link: http://space.1337arts.com/ Howard

Hi,Does anybody know if there are any legal (FAA or other) restrictions related to flying cell phones on weather balloons? One of the student teams in my course would like to do this as part of their research project.  Bernhard

So does DePaul University. I'd be glad to help, but Howard Brooks, Jason Krueger, and Glen Kissel are all much more experienced than me.

Here is an article and podcast from the March 15 NYT Science Times about a planned parachute jump from 120,000 feet. I am not suggesting this as a student project (unless you really don't like your students ;), but I think it is still interesting be…
