The Trimble Lassen iQ worked wonderfully. I've got a really nice plot of altitude vs. time with data sent from the GPS to the microcomputer (and logged on an SD card).

An easy and inexpensive micro is the PICAXE line. I have several flight computer kits for BalloonSats that use the PICAX-18X (now 18M2) and even the PICAXE-08M. Being programmed in BASIC, they are very easy to use. They even have built in ADCs,…

It is a script. I'll have to copy it when I get home and bring it in. I should also be able to find it again on the Internet.   The nice thing about it is that it waits for +5V over its USB. I suppose someone could write a script that does…

Paul - Would this "Remote USB Code" be a script?  Can you post a link to an example for people?   Thank you,   Jason

Don't forget the remote USB code. That program lets you control when the camera takes a picture by sending a five volt pulse over the mini USB port. Using it permits a flight computer to trigger the Canon.   Onwards and Upwards

Very cool, Jason! There is also an article by Paul Verhage in Nuts and Volts, September 2010, pp. 68-71 about using the CHDK on a balloon.    Another cool thing about the Canon cameras is that they are very sensitive in the near-infrared.…

Yep! We've done this in the past as well. Be sure to check the list of compatible cameras! We sent a Canon up last spring using CHDK. If only it hadn't plummeted 4000 feet to its death...

My Expirence with Near-Space Digital Camera (CHDK Hack)

A few years ago the only way to get pictures from Near-Space was to buy a digital camera cut it open and connect a microprocessor to take pictures every 10 seconds or so.  This would  destroy the camera and given the harsh environment of Near-Space would work half the time.  Recently I have been using HD video cameras to get images, but there is something really nice about digital pictures which you can just pull off the card and attach to an e-mail.

I wanted to take digital…

Free Easy Video Editing Software For Balloon Flights

I recently found a free video editing (or Capturing) software. The software is called Video Edit Master V1.8 can be found at:

http://software.tutorialsroom.com/video-edit-master/

This software allowed me to step through the flight video intervals of "Normal Speed", 1 second and Frame by Frame. You can save individual frames as JPGs as you go along.

Here are some pictures I captured:…

High-Altitude Balloon Lift

After conducting many launches and seeing high-altitude balloons tangled in trees, buildings and power lines minutes after launch, I would like to share some of the techniques I use to calculate lift of a high-altitude balloon.

The general rule for determining lift need for a high-altitude balloon to carry a payload into Near-Space is to multiply the entire payload weight by 1.5. (e.g. a 10 lb payload would require the balloon lift to be 15 lbs.) The lift need to carry the payload is… Continue

2009 June High Altitude Balloon Workshop

June 2nd 2009 -- StratoStar Systems and Taylor University concluded a very successful High-Altitude Balloon Workshop funded by National Science Foundation (NSF). Attendees came from 17 institutions across the country.

The purpose of the workshop was to help professors of Undergraduate students to implement high-altitude balloon launches in to their curriculum in order to provide an exciting hands-on application of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Payloads… Continue

High-Altitude Ballooning Equipment and TSA

Last year I presented a report on the HALO I project at the National Space Grant Directors meeting in DC. The presentation went well and I met John Kosmatka the director of the California Space Grant and professor at University of California - San Diego (UCSD). After about 6 moths John contacted me to conduct a launch with his students in CA.

Matt Garver and myself made it to the airport on time, went through security with no problems. We were sitting at our gate when we heard this,… Continue

Hi Jason,

Yes I have been working with balloon launches for 11 years now, and the biggest payload was probably SUNRISE 2300 Kilogram and totally flight weight of 6500 Kilograms, balloon size was 1.2 miljon cubic meters and the flight started at ESRANGE i Kiruna, Sweden and after 7 days SUNRISE landed in Canada safely.

Please if you have any questions regarding electronics or other stuff regarding ballooning, drop me a line here and I can try and answer you.

I´m also working with developing Telemetry system and power system for balloon payloads.

Soon I will put up more pictures and movies from our flights.

My best regards

Jason,

We should be able to fly the HALO II pod. Launch is planned for 10 AM local time on the 12th.

We're also flying a sensor for Optical Technology that I like to get close to 100 kft.

Probably means a 1000 ft/min ascent and a fairly long path.

I'd need the pod by Wednesday.

Howard
