Would anyone be interested in attending a balloon conference next summer? Taylor University is working on developing a balloon conference for faculty and their students June 22-24, 2010 (1/2 day, full day, 1/2 day). Some of the ideas include a balloon launch, poster session, breakout sessions (any ideas - technical development, curriculum???), networking, and grant development. What are your thoughts? We want this to be a way to connect and share information so your input is critical.

The conference details are set and the announcement made. Call for papers and curriculum has been sent out. Now the work begins. Taylor and StratoStar want this to be something that encourages faculty and students, starts relationships and collaborations, brings information before people and grows the body of knowledge. This conference is for all of us - and will only be good if everyone shares (isn't that what they told us to do in kindergarden?) Okay everyone - let's plan on meeting in June! http://www.taylor.edu/cri/HARP/ahc/

The conference is a go - I am working on sending out the announcement but it will be June 22-24. It is an academic conference and will be here at Taylor.

Any updates on the possibility of this conference? The time is approaching to set our summer flight schedule.

Susan,

The timing of the conference depends on the distance that the participants have to travel. For the folks within a couple of hours by car, I would think a 1/2 day - full day format would be fine. Start in the early afternoon of day one (1 pm local time). End in the late afternoon of day two (8am - 4 pm local). The day and 1/2 format would save our school the expense of the second night of lodging.

Of course, if a lot of the audience comes from a greater distance, then you have to consider their travel time (airline schedules) and the extra half day would not matter much.

Content is another issue. If the intent is to involve faculty AND students, then I think you need to focus on experiments and practical experience. The grant writing could be offered as a side activity for the faculty, perhaps during one of the meal times.

It might be useful to have discussions/panels/presentations on: involving the K-12 students, involving the local amateur radio community, successful media relations, alternative flight prediction software, ...?

Howard,
Do you think the conference is too long or too short?

That sounds interesting and maybe a better use of time. Thanks Howard!

If I have students for summer research, then a conference could work for us. I wonder about the length of the conference. I understand the balance between enough time to be worthwhile versus the expense of travel and lodging.

I don't know that a balloon flight is necessary.

Perhaps a set of presentations/posters on specific payload instruments that we have used could be informative. Particularly if the students give the presentations/posters.
