CNN Headline News Covers USI's Third High Altitude Balloon Flight

On the evening of Saturday October 24, 2009, following recovery of USI's high altitude balloon system late that afternoon, I posted a screen capture of the moment of burst on CNN's www.ireport.com, with a few lines of explanation.

I had recalled that a small group from MIT had posted images a month and a half earlier on ireport of their low cost, high risk balloon flight, which resulted in a lot of publicity. Because we didn't have a still camera on board, we didn't have any stunning "limb of the earth" photos, but I thought our screencap of the moment of burst was impressive.

The next morning I had an email from the ireport website manager wanting to speak with me. He really liked the burst photo. We spoke for over 10 minutes, in a kind of interview format (I accidentally told him our balloon went 18 miles high, when in fact it had gone only 17 miles), and he implied that the information I gave him could be used on air. He also encouraged me to post more photos and videos of the balloon flight at ireport.com.

Posting more photos would be no problem, but cutting down our extensive sets of videos seemed a more daunting task. Luckily, I had Windows Live Movie Maker on my home computer, and after fumbling around with it and listening to a few online tutorials, I easily made some short video clips of the previous day's experiences and loaded them up on ireport.com.

The next morning I got a call from CNN.com who wanted to do an online video report, and then shortly after that a producer from CNN Headline News called asking me to do an on-air interview with Chuck Roberts shortly after 12Noon.

The interview happened around 12:15 p.m CDT, Monday Oct. 26, and can be seen below.

The story was later picked up by a station in North Carolina and I was told that a local Evansville station carried some of the CNN coverage. Apparently CNN used the footage at other times as well.

The CNN Headline News producer wants to stay in contact with us for possible coverage of future flights.

CNN.com has posted their summary of the flight here:
